Michael Caballero
Finance Engineer
Michael spent 17 years closing books, running audits, and managing labor costs before he started writing the software to do it faster. As SPRCHRGR's Finance Engineer, he builds the dashboards, forecasting models, and automations that put a client's live accounting data in front of the people making decisions.
About Michael
Michael Caballero holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of New Orleans, with a concentration in audit, and has spent 17 years on the operating side of finance: controller roles across a $25M healthcare services operation, a senior accounting seat at a chemical plant start-up, and eight years running finance and then operations at a New Orleans software company. At SPRCHRGR, he is our Finance Engineer. He builds the client-facing tools our fractional CFOs and controllers rely on: interactive financial dashboards, forecasting models with scenario inputs a client's own finance lead can audit, and automations that take recurring work off a client's plate. He connects to live accounting data himself, works discrepancies down to a documented answer, and meets directly with client stakeholders to figure out what they need before he builds it.
He's currently working on a receivables dashboard for a healthcare services company client of our firm, where every collections reminder the accounting team sends to each of our client's customers gets logged together with the AR data so the client's account management team can see who was contacted, and when, without having to ask. He's also validating and extending the forecasting logic inside a financial dashboard for a SaaS client, joining our work on a live payroll data integration with a national payroll platform, and building secure workflow automation solutions for our own firm's back office function.
Background
Michael started his career at a national food services company as unit controller and moved through five other controller roles since then, giving him a variety of experience and perspective on what "good" looks like in the accounting back-office. In one of those roles he helped fold the accounting for 13 units into a single hub run by four people. As controller for a healthcare business, Michael owned the books for $25M of managed volume and met regularly with the client's C-suite. A system-wide plan he helped lead added $1.6M in revenue and $1.4M in gross profit over the prior year, and the point-of-sale, card management, and ordering systems he deployed saved the business $350,000 in supply and administrative costs. At a start-up chemical plant, Michael set up the accounting and finance modules of SAP, ran the data migration from the acquired operation, and coordinated reporting with affiliates in Germany, Singapore, and Tokyo, while running month-end close, the internal and external audits, capital expenditure tracking, and multistate tax filings.
Michael then transitioned to a Director of Finance role at an online travel and lifestyle bookings company. He ran accounting, budgeting, forecasting, tax, treasury, and payroll, built the company's first KPI reporting, and reworked time tracking with the project management team to raise state tax incentive claims by 50%. Promoted to Director of Operations there in 2023, Michael took on labor cost directly. A three-month capacity analysis produced more than $900,000 in year-over-year margin gains, renegotiated outside labor partnerships cut $1.3M (19%) from annual labor cost with the same number of people deployed, and internal platform spend fell 43%. To manage all of it he built a real-time labor reporting system that pulls from ADP, Jira, and Tempo, classifies every hour as billable, capitalized, or internal, and projects labor cost and capacity before staffing decisions reach the P&L. It is the same work he now does for SPRCHRGR clients: joining data that was never designed to fit together, applying accounting judgment to how it's classified, and giving leadership numbers they can act on.
