From Startup to Scale: How Westwind Recovery Built a Financial Foundation for Rapid Growth in Behavioral Health

Industry
Healthcare
Challenge

Westwind Recovery's rapid growth was outpacing its financial infrastructure. The founder was managing bookkeeping, payroll, billing, and compliance herself — consuming 15+ hours per week that should have been invested in patient care and strategic growth.

Outcome

SPRCHRGR engineered the financial backbone Westwind needed to sustain its growth trajectory — giving time back to the founder, delivering clean books and consistent reporting, and building infrastructure that supported fast-paced 4x growth.

"I was doing everything myself — the books, payroll, billing — and it was pulling me away from what I do best, which is patient care. SPRCHRGR gave us the financial infrastructure we needed to keep growing without missing a beat. I finally have a team I trust with the numbers, and I can focus on building the business."

Founder, Westwind Recovery

The Client

Westwind Recovery is a Los Angeles-based behavioral health and addiction treatment center founded by Justin Wells. What started as a small sober living facility has evolved into a comprehensive treatment operation offering detox, residential, and outpatient programs — growing from one 6-bed home to a full service, multi-location enterprise.

The Challenge

Justin built Westwind Recovery from the ground up — but rapid growth was outpacing her ability to manage the financial side of the business. As the organization scaled, he found himself stretched across clinical leadership, operations, and financial management simultaneously. Bookkeeping, payroll, billing, insurance reimbursements, and compliance demands were consuming 15+ hours per week — time that should have been invested in patient care and strategic growth.

Westwind needed professional financial infrastructure: clean books, accurate reporting, streamlined accounts payable and receivable, and controller-level oversight. But hiring a full in-house finance team wasn't realistic for a company at this stage. Justin needed a partner who could hit the ground running and deliver sophisticated financial operations at a pace that matched Westwind's growth — without the overhead or leadership drag from recruiting and managing full-time hires.

The Partnership

In 2022, Westwind Recovery partnered with SPRCHRGR to engineer the financial backbone the organization needed to sustain its trajectory.

How We Supported + Supercharged

SPRCHRGR deployed a tailored, scalable finance solution that gave Westwind Recovery executive-level financial operations without the full-time commitment. Key elements included:

  • Historical books cleanup — SPRCHRGR cleaned up prior-period financials, giving Westwind a reliable baseline for forward-looking analysis and investor conversations.
  • Payroll processing and compliance support — SPRCHRGR handled payroll operations and ensured Westwind stayed current on regulatory and tax compliance requirements — critical in the heavily regulated behavioral health space.
  • Streamlined accounts payable and receivable — Vendor payments, insurance reimbursements, and billing workflows were systematized to eliminate bottlenecks and improve cash flow visibility.
  • Outsourced bookkeeping and controller services — SPRCHRGR's team took full ownership of day-to-day accounting, ensuring clean, accurate books and month-end closes that leadership could trust.
  • Recurring financial reporting — Leadership gained access to timely, accurate financials that provided the visibility needed to make confident decisions about hiring, expansion, and resource allocation.
  • Recruiting and training insourced staff — As Westwind's organization continued to grow, SPRCHRGR's role evolved advising, controllership oversight, and FP&A support, while helping source, screen, and train up Westwind's first in-house accountant.

The Outcome

With SPRCHRGR optimizing the financial engine, Justin and his leadership team had more time and insight to reinvest in clinical operations and growth strategy. The impact was immediate and compounding:

  • Operational clarity — Clean financials and consistent reporting gave leadership real-time visibility into the business, enabling faster, more confident decision-making.
  • Growth-ready infrastructure — Professional financial operations supported Westwind's expansion, including evaluating new locations and scaling headcount.
  • Investor confidence — Accurate, well-organized books positioned Westwind favorably for external investment conversations and strategic partnerships.
  • Sustained value creation — With the financial foundation locked in, Westwind continues growing while serving as a beacon of hope and healing for our clients and families.
