APIs. XML. MVC. Most of us have no idea what technical acronyms like these stand for, let alone what to do with them. Then there are people like Josh Berman, who've built a career mastering them. Josh is both a technical wizard and a strategist. Since 2004, he's held a series of roles, from Lead Developer to Implementation Specialist to CTO, and now VP of Technology for SPRCHRGR. He balances out his techie side with business expertise spanning CRM, supply chain, ERP, forecasting, ecommerce and much more.
Josh is a Microsoft Certified Professional who has written business software since 2004, and most of his work at SPRCHRGR revolves around “working smarter, not harder”. He built sprchrgr.app, the client portal where our clients open their dashboards, verify payment requests and securely share information with their accounting team, along with the engine underneath it. The system synchronizes each client's financial data into its own private database on a schedule, enables deterministic accounting workflow automations to run like clockwork, and ensures that reports and dashboards run on real-time numbers instead of last month's export.
He also builds bespoke custom applications that embed into our clients’ own operational workflows to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and provide secure access to key information. True to SPRCHRGR’s beliefs, Josh always prefers a clear rule over an AI guess wherever the accounting is already defined. In his words: "If you're working with people who have the experience, they'll take the time to listen to the problem, pick it apart, and close the gaps."
Background
Before SPRCHRGR, Josh was a vice president at a software company whose inventory and order management system connects directly to QuickBooks. He oversaw development of every product and platform, worked with customers on complex requirements, and ran technical support and the help desk for software used by thousands of people. That background shapes how he works now: he knows what a general ledger database looks like from the inside, and he knows the difference between a demo and software people rely on every day.
At SPRCHRGR, Josh has built custom integrations wherever an off-the-shelf connector couldn't handle a client's setup. For a multi-entity wealth management firm that paid more than 100 vendor bills a month on behalf of its subsidiaries, an import tool now copies each bill, line by line, into the right subsidiary's QuickBooks file and saves about 40 hours of manual entry a month. For a youth education nonprofit whose membership platform had no accounting connection or open API, a custom data transfer keeps revenue, billing and receivables in sync with QuickBooks and saves enough in labor to fund more scholarships. He has also built a two-way Expensify connection that sends approved expenses and receipts to project-level budgets in industry-specific software, custom connections from a multi-location medical franchise's patient management, point-of-sale and payroll systems into its ERP, and a data warehouse that joins a creative agency's CRM, project management system and QuickBooks into one set of KPIs. He writes for our Insights library on finance integration, multi-entity data syncing and cybersecurity, and he designed the layered security controls that protect client data across our systems. Off the clock
Off the clock, Josh is usually outdoors: scuba diving, mountain biking, kayaking, backpacking and camping. He also enjoys a good beer and a football game, and he volunteered as a Cub Scouts den leader from 2014 to 2017.
